More Information

What is a Torque Sensor?

A torque sensor is also called a torque transducer or torque meter. It is divided into two categories: dynamic torque sensor and static torque sensor. The static torque sensor rotates less than 360°. The dynamic torque sensor rotates more than 360°.

Among them, the dynamic torque sensor can be further divided into torque sensor, torque speed sensor, non-contact torque sensor and rotational torque sensor. This type of sensor is used to detect torsional torque in various rotating or non-rotating mechanical parts.

It can effectively convert the physical change of torque into an accurate electrical signal, providing key support for the manufacture of equipment such as viscometers, electric (or pneumatic, hydraulic) torque wrenches.

Torque Sensor Structure

What is the Use of a Torque Sensor?

Energy field:
In wind turbines and hydroelectric generators, torque sensors are used to monitor torque changes in real time.

Industrial automation production line:
In the manufacturing production line of high-end electronic equipment, torque sensors can monitor torque fluctuations in real time during the operation of the equipment.

Medical device field:
In the joints of the robotic arm of the surgical robot, the torque sensor can accurately sense the operating force, allowing doctors to accurately control the movement of the robotic arm during remote operation.
At the same time, in some rehabilitation training equipment, torque sensors are also used to measure the user’s limb movement torque to achieve personalized rehabilitation training.

Material mechanical properties testing:
In the material testing machine, the torque sensor is used to measure the torque and torsion angle of the material in the torsion test, so as to obtain the mechanical properties parameters of the material.

Transportation field:
In the train traction system and ship propulsion system, the torque sensor is used to measure the torque of the drive shaft. It can monitor the train traction power and ship power output, which helps to improve transportation efficiency and safety.

Metrology and detection field:
Torque sensors can be used to establish torque measurement standards and provide accurate standard torque values for the calibration and verification of other torque measurement equipment.

Automobile manufacturing:
Torque sensors play an important role in the processing control and detection of automobile engines, diesel engines, steering gears and other parts.
At the same time, torque sensors can also be used for transient torque testing of automobile engines, providing key basis for the optimization control of engines.

Torque Meter

Aerospace:
In the research and development and production of aircraft engines, torque sensors are used to measure the torque of the engine drive shaft.
At the same time, torque sensors also play an important role in the flight control system of aircraft. It is used to measure the driving torque of the control surface, so as to accurately control the attitude and flight direction of the aircraft.

What is the Principle of the Torque Sensor?

The torque sensor is based on the Wheatstone bridge effect. When the torque acts on the strain gauge torque sensor, it causes the elastic element inside the sensor to deform.

Although this deformation is small, it is enough to cause the resistance of the resistance strain gauge attached to the elastic element to change. The resistance strain gauge is a special resistance material that can convert mechanical strain into a change in resistance value.

When the resistance value changes, the signal processing circuit inside the sensor will capture this change and convert the change in resistance value into a measurable and transmittable electrical signal. The electrical signal is proportional to the magnitude of the torque, so we can infer the magnitude of the torque by measuring the magnitude of the electrical signal.

Torque Sensor Working Principle

Precautions for Torque Sensors:

It is forbidden to operate with power on and avoid collision with the sensor.

Check the tightness of the wiring and coupling regularly.

When calibrating with high precision, pay attention to the connection quality to avoid coaxiality errors.
